Food Frozen In Time: Sandy’s Cherry Tomatoes

Food In 2010

My life hasn’t been as organic as I’ve hoped, especially the last two month of 2009. And the first few days of 2010 haven’t started off so well either. To be honest I think I’m a bit depressed or my body is reacting to all the junk I’ve eaten. Maybe its the dark cold weather. Maybe its the guilt that I haven’t fed my children the healthiest meals either. Maybe its our money troubles. Maybe….. maybe its a lot of things. I keep telling myself I’m going to start exercising again, but I haven’t. I think a little exercise would do me a lot of good. Just a little over two years ago I could run 6 miles on the treadmill. I could run a few on the trails (the trails are tough on my knees) too. Then I got pregnant. Then I had my baby. Then My husband came back from Iraq for good and now everything is back to normal, and though I began the year physically fit and filled with energy and happiness despite life’s problem, the end of the year and the beginning of this year are not so cheerful for me, though I have everything to be grateful for. Like I said it’s probably the weather and I just need to force myself to begin. I need to force myself to eat better again today, no more holiday junk food. I knew it was bad that we had it, but it comes in gifts, in stocking stuffers, from schools, for homemade baked goods and before I knew it I was just saying only a little bit to myself and my children. There’s no harm in a little bit and there wasn’t except a little bit became a lot, because I have a problem with food…when I’m down I eat it for comfort. The worse I eat the worse I feel. The worse I feel the less I care what I eat and if it’s organic, or local or even healthy a slight bit goes out the window. I know this too, but I do nothing. Nothing at all until I’m tired of feeling tired and down. I think I’m at that point now. I hope I am. I feel like I am and yesterday I began to take those tiny steps to get back on track. The junk food is almost all gone and I don’t plan on buying any either. We go shopping on Tuesday…

Organic Gardening and Plant For The Hungry

We sewed more seeds for our organic garden this week, seeds my husband bought from the localharvest link I sent him a few weeks ago. He bought some organic marigolds, organic pumpkin seeds and some organic okra. While helping him lace the pumpkin seeds in the dirt I prepared another planter for pumpkin seeds. He told me to save the rest for next year. I asked him, “Won’t the seeds go bad?” He said, “I don’t think so, but we don’t need that many plants”. I said, “We can swap seedling with neighbors that garden”, but he didn’t seem to like the idea much. Before he could responded he was distracted by my neighbor.

Later that evening, while reading my emails, I read the local harvest email in my inbox, which eventually lead me to a link I found interesting and later told my husband about. He loved the idea. What’s the idea? Feeding the hungry. Check it out here.

CSA Response

The response I was waiting for came last week. Recent life changes have kept me from posting the response here sooner. I have altered the names out of respect for privacy.

“Hello, Gloria. This is G^&*.

H#$# has been under the weather and asked that I respond to your inquiry.
First let me say you should never hesitate to say so if our program does not fit your desires, OK? We will understand and you will not offend us. This meat is raised slowly and with great care not only for the creature’s well-being and the nutritional qualities that it delivers but for sustainable agriculture and the environment. It’s a completely different product and it does cost more.
That being said, we hit these rough spots every year following our hot dry summers. It always slows down our growth, especially in our cattle, which are mostly black and most vulnerable to hot conditions. So our beef has to have time to recover, and we are short on beef items temporarily. Thus the steak and pork chop instead of 2 of each. Sorry – in this program you live and die with your farmer. It will get better.

Also, regardless of the package mix, you will find that your supply will do as promised – feed 2 adults 3 times per week. That does assume that you are eating a balanced meal, but if you weighed everything out, you would find that you have more than 8 ounces per person per meal. My wife and I are not small people, and we easily stretch a package to 14-16 meals per week including leftovers from the roasts and chicken.

We hope you will stay with us long enough to go through a few cycles before you make a decision on our home delivery program.
Sincerely,
G^&*”

Another email soon followed.

“One last note, Gloria. The cooler was 1 Sunday meal short of what we usually include. I think you will see that next month is a bit better.

G^&*”

The response was enough for me to decide to give it another shot. Since my email to them and their response I will say that the CSA meats I have tried have not been disappointing (the meat is fresh and tender) and the meals stretched (except for the whole chicken) farther than I thought they would.
